Anne with an E and Katherine with a K
oil on canvas, 12×24 (times 2), 2025
As I was painting my much loved backyard lupine, I was reflecting on the very straight and tidy rows of lupine flowers. I thought of a classroom, with desks perfectly placed. Which then made me think of Katherine, the fusty schoolmarm in “Anne of Avonlea”** All she needed was a little friendship from Anne (with an E of course) to pull her out of her loneliness and meanness. I’ve always loved the scene near the end of the movie (I suppose this is a spoiler?) where Katherine is picking apples at Green Gables, and Anne tells Katherine that she looks fashionable and Katherine replies “Don’t be such a gooseberry!” and she’s laughing and eating an apple. I think as a child I marvelled at the change, from a character I was truly afraid of, to a friend laughing and happy.
After painting them I found out that lupines grow rampant in PEI and are unofficially considered by many to be the provincial flower. Little Annes and Katherines everywhere!
These two happy friends look best hung together, and were painted as a diptych to do so. The price is for both.
**if you have no idea what I’m talking about, it’s time to watch “Anne of Green Gables” and “Anne of Avonlea”. Immerse yourself in a little Canadiana.
Painted using walnut-based oils on gallery sized canvas (1.5 inches thick). I have painted the sides of the canvas to seamlessly continue the image so that no framing is necessary.
Shipping: Local residents of Victoria please choose “local pickup” in shipping if you would prefer picking it up from my studio in Gordon Head. Otherwise shipping is $20 in Canada, $25 in the US. International collectors can email me to calculate shipping fees at janetspaintedlife@gmail.com.
